Chop Verb

Currently the shared diffuse reverb core rather than a chopped or rhythmically gated verb.

The current base reverb core sums four damped comb stages, runs that field through two serial diffuser stages, and then shapes the result with a high shelf before blending it with the dry source. `space` stretches the delay lengths in the comb and diffuser network, `decay` raises the comb feedback coefficients, and `tone` opens the damping and final brightness, so this family is a single diffuse comb-and-diffuser reverb architecture shared across many names. There is no rhythmic chopping stage in the current code.

Preview source

Effect core

Four parallel damped combs into two serial diffusers with post-reverb high-shelf shaping.

Signal path

The static waveform and the live player both reflect this compiled signal chain.

  • internal picked-string demo phrase
  • stereo spread with a short right-channel delay
  • four parallel damped comb stages
  • two serial diffuser stages
  • post-reverb high-shelf shaping
  • dry / wet blend
  • DC blocker
  • output gain trim
  • final tanh limiter

Controls that matter

These are the currently active controls detected in the FAUST source for this effect.

  • mix: Blends between the dry source and the wet reverb field after the reverb core.
  • output_gain_db: Applies final post-effect level trim after DC blocking and before the output limiter.
  • space: Expands the comb and diffuser delay lengths inside the diffuse reverb network.
  • decay: Raises the feedback coefficients of the parallel comb stages.
  • tone: Raises the damping cutoffs inside the comb network and brightens the final high-shelf stage.

Controls

Audible controls in this DSP

  • mix

    Active

Blends between the dry source and the wet reverb field after the reverb core.

Lower settings stay more direct; higher settings move the patch further into the ambient tail.

  • output_gain_db

    Active

Applies final post-effect level trim after DC blocking and before the output limiter.

Matches loudness without changing the actual reverb structure.

  • space

    Active

Expands the comb and diffuser delay lengths inside the diffuse reverb network.

Moves the tail from tighter reflections toward a larger, more spread-out space.

  • decay

    Active

Raises the feedback coefficients of the parallel comb stages.

Extends the tail and makes the ambience hang on longer.

  • tone

    Active

Raises the damping cutoffs inside the comb network and brightens the final high-shelf stage.

Makes the tail darker at low settings and more open and glossy at high settings.

Analysis

Code-derived notes

Current implementation shares the same four-comb, two-diffuser diffuse reverb core across Plate, Plate Small, Plate Large, Chamber, Dattorro Reverb, Freeverb, JCREV, SATREV, Zita Light, Zita FDN, Nonlinear Reverb, Chop Verb, Ducked Verb, Trem Verb, and Magneto Echo-Verb. Chop Verb does not yet chop the reverb tail.
